  1.                       Principles of Wiccan Belief
  2.    (as adopted by the Council of American Witches, April, 1974)

  4. 1.  We practice rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm
  5.     of life forces marked by the phases of the moon and the
  6.     Seasonal Quarters and Cross-Quarters.
  7.  
  8. 2.  We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique
  9.     responsibility towards our environment.  We seek to live in
  10.     harmony with nature, in ecological balance offering
  11.     fulfillment to life and consciousness within an evolutionary
  12.     concept.

  14. 3.  We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than that apparent
  15.     to the average person. Because it is far greater than ordinary
  16.     it is sometimes called "supernatural", but we see it as lying
  17.     within that which is naturally potential to all.

  19. 4.  We conceive of the Creative Power in the universe as manifest
  20.     through polarity -- as masculine and feminine -- and that same
  21.     Creative power lies in all people, and functions through the
  22.     interaction of masculine and feminine. We value neither above
  23.     the other, knowing each to be supportive to the other. We
  24.     value sex as pleasure, as the symbol and embodiment of life,
  25.     and as one of the sources of energies used in magical practice
  26.     and religious worship.

  28. 5.  We recognize both outer worlds and inner, or psychological,
  29.     worlds known sometimes as the Spiritual World, the Collective
  30.     Unconscious, Inner Planes, etc. - and we see in the
  31.     interaction of these two dimensions the basis for paranormal
  32.     phenomena and magickal exercises. We neglect neither dimension
  33.     for the other, seeing both as necessary for our fulfillment.

  35. 6.  We do not recognize any authoritarian hierarchy, but do honor
  36.     those who teach, respect those who share their greater
  37.     knowledge and wisdom, and acknowledge those who courageously
  38.     give of themselves in leadership.

  40. 7.  We see religion, magic, and wisdom in living as being united
  41.     in the way one views the world and live within it - a world
  42.     view and philosophy of life which we identify as 'Witchcraft -
  43.     the Wiccan Way'.

  45. 8.  Calling oneself "Witch" does not make one a Witch - but
  46.     neither does heredity itself, nor the collecting of titles,
  47.     degrees and initiations.  A Witch seeks to control the forces
  48.     within themselves that make life possible in order to live
  49.     wisely and well without harm to others and in harmony with
  50.     Nature.

  52. 9.  We believe in the affirmation and fulfillment of life in a
  53.     continuation of evolution and development of consciousness
  54.     giving meaning to the Universe we know and our personal role
  55.     within it.

  57. 10. Our only animosity towards Christianity, or towards any other
  58.     religion or philosophy of life, is to the extent that its
  59.     institutions have claimed to be 'the only way' and have sought
  60.     to deny freedom to others and to suppress other ways of
  61.     religious practice and belief.

  63. 11. As American Witches, we are not threatened by debates on the
  64.     history of the Craft, the origins of various terms, the
  65.     legitimacy of various aspects of different traditions.  We are
  66.     concerned with our present and our future.

  68. 12. We do not accept the concept of absolute evil, nor do we
  69.     worship any entity known as "Satan" or "the Devil", as defined
  70.     by the Christian tradition. We do not seek power through the
  71.     suffering of others, nor accept that personal benefit can be
  72.     derived only by denial to another.

  74. 13. We beleive that we should seek within Nature that which is
  75.     contibutory to our health and well-being.

  78.   This is not in any way an all-encompassing credo applicable to
  79.   all groups who consider themselves Wiccans or Witches, but
  80.   rather is the set of principles adopted by one such group. As
  81.   there are differences between various Christian sects, so are
  82.   there difference between those of Wicca. However, while the
  83.   specifics may differ, the general attitude and reasoning behind
  84.   these declarations remains relatively consistent.
